Dear Walgrove Families and Staff,

We hope you have been enjoying a peaceful weekend despite challenges.

Here are a few announcements:

Local Superintendent Dr. Adaina Brown will no longer be overseeing Local District West (which is now called Region West). She will be an Officer in the Human Resources division overseeing Equity and Inclusion. The new Interim Superintendent for Region West will be Dr. Denise Collier.

STEAM Studio Teacher Jennifer Racusin has also transitioned into another role. We thank her for her service thus far. We are determining next steps for the Upper Grade STEAM Studio classes. In the meantime, our own certificated teachers are very adept at leading STEAM projects. More details to come!

Parents, if you are able to provide for more than your own child (Menchie's are $5; 20% goes to Walgrove), please do so via Venmo (new account coming soon) and we will steer those dollars to those who are both in need and desire. (Not everyone wants their kiddos to partake.)

We will continue to offer Menchie's as an after-school fundraiser so long as it brings out the best in our kiddos.

Dear Walgrove Families and Staff,

Welcome back after three weeks of rest and relatives (hopefully not relative rest!)

I can't wait to see you all tomorrow!!!

Per Superintendent Carvalho's phone message, it is recommended that you take the COVID tests that were provided right before Winter Break to ensure that you are coming to school COVID-free.

If your test is negative, yay. There is nothing to do! Just come to school and either mask or not. Masking is recommended but is still your choice.

If your COVID test is positive:

> Upload your positive test (with identifying info) to the Daily Dashboard/Parent Portal

> Notify the office

> Isolate for 5+ days (until negative, or until 10 days have passed)

> Tell close contacts to mask for 10 days

If your kiddo is coughing or sneezing, and it is not COVID but is also not allergies, please keep them at home. Please do not send sick kiddos to school with anything contagious. We will have to send them right back home. Thank you for your understanding.

School Experience Survey

Each and every year the District collects important information from staff, students, and families regarding their perceptions of various aspects of school including school climate, student contentedness, student and family access to materials, staff contentedness, and more.

This year, the survey is due Friday, December 9, 2022.

The class with the highest parent participation rate will win FREE Menchie's AND will get to cut in front of the line at the next available Menchie's.

1. STAFF AND PARENTS ACCESS THE SURVEY HERE:

2. PARENTS, AFTER YOU TAKE THE SURVEY, FILL THIS OUT SO I KNOW:

Walgrove Weekly Message 12/04/2022

Dear Walgrove Families and Staff,

Time has flown like a chevron of flying birds! It is already almost time for our Winter Break.

But before we move forward, let us reflect on at least the last week.

This past Friday, we hosted a memorial service for our beloved 30-year volunteer Michael Stenger. Approximately 100 people joined us, first in the Wildlands, then in the auditorium, to honor his remarkable life and legacy of heroism, gentleness, and kindness.

This weekend -- last night and today -- the Angel City Youth Chorale, comprised of 50 students in grades first and upward, across Los Angeles -- half of which are from Walgrove! -- performed at UCLA's Royce Hall as part of the Angel City Chorale's yearly winter celebration and singalong. (See the photos below!)

And, we have more to look forward to in the coming weeks.

Here is some of what is coming up this week at Walgrove:

MON

Violin in the Auditorium 2:30pm

After-school tutoring

TUE

Williams Safety Inspection 11am. No clutter. No heavy items atop cabinets. No daisy-chains. No obstructed doorways. No appliances (in instructional rooms). No open flames. No chain-saw juggling.

Staff Mtg and PD 1:45 in Rm 19 followed by asynchronous anti-bias trainings via MyPLN

After-school tutoring

WED

Lunchtime Cleanup Committee (created by students) 12:00-12:45 in the Cafeteria

SSPT meeting 2:45

After-school tutoring

THU

After-school tutoring

FRI

Assembly 8:05 in the Quad. Ms. B's class to lead the Pledge. Maria Rosa to perform a Brazilian tune.

Menchie's 2:30pm. The class with the highest % of parent School Experience Survey completion gets to cut in line at Menchie's AND gets free Menchie's courtesy of Dr. K.

(So, parents please complete your surveys NOW!). Here is a direct link to the parent survey: https://survey.alchemer.com/s3/7016961/2022-23-School-Experience-Survey-Parents-and-Guardians-of-Students. ALL SURVEYS DUE 12/09/2022.

SAT

Volunteer Day in the Wildlands and Edible Garden 9am-1pm

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

IMPORTANT: Parents of 4th and 5th graders, please make sure your kiddos take the STUDENT version of the School Experience Survey (via their LAUSD email. It is not a web link. Instead, it was sent to their emails). We tried to administer the survey this week during school, as we were directed to by the higher-ups, but we were only mildly successful as too many students had parent-controls on their LAUSD devices and LAUSD emails. Please know that we do need to access student email and LAUSD devices and other LAUSD applications during instruction. So, please release such controls as they pertain to LAUSD emails and devices, AND please make sure your child does/did complete their version of the School Experience Survey. THESE SURVEYS ARE DUE THIS WEEK.

Please think twice about sending toys to school with your kiddos, as they tend to cause opportunities for distraction in class and conflict at recess and lunch. We do have sufficient toys and games in class and during recess (and we don't allow toys while eating lunch). I would hate for your child to lose their most prized toy.

The Lost and Found is managed beautifully by STAR (and STAR kids), and it is out in front of the school every weekday from 2:30-6pm. So, if you are missing a water bottle, sweatshirt, jacket, hat or other item, please check out the STAR Gate in front of the school each and every day until 6. Anything left after December 16 will be washed and donated over the Winter Break to the Ladera Heights Goodwill.

After school tutoring through Windward School students is available this winter. To register, click here

UPCOMING EVENTS:

Holiday Market and Holiday Show Thursday, December 15. More detailed info forthcoming. But save the date!

UPDATE Regarding Acceleration Days w/Registration Info

Dear Walgrove Community,

This is an update regarding the Acceleration Days scheduled for December 19 and 20.

While our site will NOT be open for the Acceleration Days (the District did not select us as a site), I am pleased to share that our families and employees can participate at a neighboring site:

ACCELERATION DAY SITES IN OUR COMMUNITY OF SCHOOLS:

Elementary: Broadway, Braddock

Middle: Marina Del Rey, Mark Twain

High: Venice

Special Ed Center: McBride

Monday, December 19, and Tuesday, December 20.

Over the next several days, we will receive and provide additional information about this important program, but I wanted to share the following:

  • Walgrove students will report to Broadway.

  • LAUSD is extending student registration for Acceleration Days. There is another opportunity for students to register this week.

  • Parents, if you would like to register your children to participate and have not already via the District survey, please contact the school office or, better yet, complete this google form so Tracy and I can easily and accurately facilitate registration: https://forms.gle/y5k3Tkdh1XgT3weu8

  • Employees may also still register. Employees interested in participating should contact Tracy or myself.

  • Students and employees participating will receive confirmation letters beginning the week of 12/5.

  • The deadline for additional student and staff registration is Tuesday, 12/6.

Please remember that Acceleration Days offer key opportunities for both intervention and enrichment. The schedule will mirror our regular daily schedule, and we will have Food Services and Beyond the Bell after-school care available.

Thank you, and please see me if you have any questions.

Best,

Dr. Andrea Kittelson

Principal
