Walgrove Weekly Message

Dear Walgrove Families and Staff,

First off, I am so grateful and pleased that the SEIU-99 strike resolved and that prized Walgrove team members have been given their due acknowledgement. Indeed, we would not be able to offer either school or positive and meaningful school relationships without these very prized and skilled team members. Can you imagine a world without our Special Education Assistants or Instructional Aides or B&G custodial workers or bus drivers or cafeteria staff or others on the same front lines? I cannot!

I proffer an immense gratitude to all of you who supported our staff throughout the three-day work stoppage -- and beyond.

We welcome your kiddos and you with open and better-armed arms during this coming week.

Here is some of what is coming up this week at Walgrove:

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENTS:

LOST AND FOUND

Lost and Found will be available via the STAR Gate (the Walgrove Ave. gate between the Cafeteria and the Auditorium) 2:30-6pm ALL WEEK. Everything in possession will be on display. We have additional racks and hangers. Come and find your stuff, or we will wash and donate imminently.

DEVICES

If you received an iPad or Chromebook during the 3-day strike, please return it along with the charger. Or fear self-critical self-talk accompanied by less sleep. (Or phone calls. Ugh.)

BOOK FAIR ISSUE

Please check your kiddos' backpacks (or excited tales) for anything bauble-y they may have absconded with during the Book Fair, as seven books that were once adorned with baubles were effectively de-baubled during the Book Fair (so far). While we do anticipate a certain amount of loss during the Book Fair, as kiddos make their wish-lists, we do need to cover the losses. So, please help us do that. Please, if you are able, donate here: BOOK FAIR LOSSES DUE TO CHILD EXCITEMENT

Thank you so much for your partnership and support!

Let's have a great week, Walgrove!

UPDATED COVID GUIDANCE AS OF 03.21.2023

Dear Walgrove Community,

Here is the gist of the updated COVID guidance, as of March 21, 2023:

Asymptomatic positive cases isolate for five days and afterward may return to school or work without testing negative.

Symptomatic positive cases isolate for five days and afterward may return to school or work without testing negative IF their symptoms have diminished and they have had NO FEVER FOR 24 HOURS WITHOUT FEVER REDUCING MEDICATIONS.

Symptomatic positive cases must mask upon their return for 10 days unless they have two negative test results from tests taken one day apart after Day 5.

So, no testing required in order to return on Day 6. But testing required to return unmasked

Close contacts include all those sharing the same indoor space (if under 400K cubic feet; our classrooms are approximately 12K cubic feet) for 48 hours before the case tested positive or experienced symptoms through the remainder of the isolation period. This is whether or not they were masked. Outdoor contacts are not close contacts, whether or not they were masked.

Close contacts are recommended but not required to mask and should test within 3-5 days after exposure.

All parents of positive cases should upload their positive results to the Parent Portal and notify the school (the teacher plus Jackie, Tracy and me -- jxr0047@lausd.net, tracy.mccarthy@lausd.net, andrea.kittelson1@lausd.net)

Please see more details here.

LSLC and SSC Info and Minutes 2022-2023

The current Local School Leadership Council (LSLC), which should have more teachers than parents, (and 50% teachers) is comprised of:

Principal Andrea Kittelson
SAA Tracy McCarthy
Teacher Ana Lima
Teacher Doug Merrick
Teacher Alejandra Biolatto
Parent Lisa Margeson

Alternate Parents: Donchelle Florence-Rhodes and Shaina Shapiro

The current School Site Council (SSC), which should have more parents than teachers, is comprised of:

Principal Andrea Kittelson
SAA Tracy McCarthy
Teacher Doug Merrick
Parent Agata Schultz
Parent Sharon Beam
Parent Rebecca Rosengard

Alternate Parents: Donchelle Florence-Rhodes and Shaina Shapiro
Alternate Teacher: Alejandra Biolatto

Here is information on each committee's respective composition and purview:

The LSLC and SSC meetings are monthly, typically on the third Thursday at 3 and 3:30, respectively, in Dr. K's Zoom room

In addition to hosting LSLC and SSC meetings, where elected representatives vote on specific items over which the LSLC and SSC have purview, the Principal sends surveys to all staff and families via email in order to elicit staff and family input on matters over which District and School administrators have purview. Survey results, while not binding, are informative and help the District and School administrators arrive at decisions.

All staff and families are invited to all LSLC and SSC meetings. While all are invited to bring forth questions and comments, only elected representatives may vote

On matters that are not under the purview of the LSLC and SSC, the District and School administrators have the privilege and responsibility to make decisions. While input is sought, not all action items are by consensus or brought to a vote.

Here are the LSLC and SSC Meeting Minutes from 2022-2023

Principal Andrea Kittelson andrea.kittelson1@lausd.net

APEIS Jackie Robnett jxr0047@lausd.net

FOR ADDED CONTEXT: The parent organization, Friends of Walgrove (FOW), is a separate entity, and its purpose is twofold: 1) to raise $ for Walgrove; and 2) to build community. FOW is not a school-based decision-making body with purview over school matters. While the FOW Board and school administration meet weekly to discuss school needs, FOW does not determine school needs.
