Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports/Restorative Practices (PBIS/RP) at Walgrove 2023-2024

LAUSD and Walgrove emply Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports/Restorative Practices (PBIS/RP). PBIS is a nationwide (actually, global) framework for setting up behavior expectations, positive reinforcements and logical, appropriate and restorative consequences at schools.

Below are our our official prevailing documents. The folks who approve revisions to these documents are the Local School Leadership Council (LSLC).

For information on how to become a part of the LSLC, please read this information on the LSLC and then come to LSLC orientation meeting Monday, September 11, 2023 at 3pm in Dr. K's Zoom room

Here are a few details - in layperson language - about what these behaviors looks like around campus:

We treat one another with empathy and kindness. We don't call others names and when we see someone falter, we help them. When we see someone be unkind to someone else, we step in and are upstanders.

When we misstep and do something unkind, we own up to it and strive to make amends. We don't just apologize and move on. We work a bit harder to find out what the other person needs to feel restored.

We clean up after ourselves, and we clean a little extra. When we see litter on a table or on the ground, we pick it up and toss it. When we see rocks out of place in the Wildlands, we put them back on the correct path. When we see a sweatshirt in the yard, we bring it to the Lost and Found. When we see balls out and about, we bring them to the PE office or the Principal office. Just as you will not hear Walgrove staff say, "That's not my job," you will not hear Walgrove kiddos say, "that's not mine."

We run in the yard, not the Cafeteria area or the Quad, as running in those high-traffic areas is unsafe for all. (We also refrain from skating or riding bikes in those high-traffic areas.)

During morning supervision, we stay at - or close to - the tables where we are invited to play boardgames. We don't run and play tag or stand on the boxes that surround the trees.

During lunch, we follow lunch procedures. We bring what we need, stay for the duration, ask for help/to be escorted if we need to use the restroom, clean up thoroughly, then walk to recess, where we run and play. (Vice versa for Grades 4-5.)

We only chew gum in class with teacher permission (in order to support cognition for those who need/desire that support). We do not chew gum recreationally around campus, because when running and playing, the gum can become a hazard to us, and when the gum falls to the ground, it becomes a hazard to birds and other wildlife.

We leave our toys (Pokemon cards, trucks, cars, etc) at home because when we bring them to school, they can get lost or stolen or inspire conflict. We have much equipment at school to play with.

If we have technology (phones, tablets, laptops) with us at school, we keep that technology in our backpacks unless instructed by a teacher to take it out and use it in class for academic purposes or unless invited by staff to use it for emergencies after school. We do not use technology recreationally at school. This includes during the various after-school programs

We use the apparatus as it was designed, without bringing books, pencils, markers, toys or any other items at all, as they cause damage to the apparatus and pose a safety hazard. (And we don't use the apparatus, or even step onto the mats, during the after-school program, as the after-school program forbids it for liability reasons.)

At Friday morning assemblies, we face the speakers and performers, refrain from speaking when they are speaking or performing and honor their contributions with huge, friendly applause :)

We treat all Walgrove animals, including our 9 upper-yard hens and Ms. Chin's rooster and hen, Mack and Hazel, with the utmost care and respect. We treat them as we would want to be treated ourselves. We only feed them if invited to by Farmer Adam, the Principal or their designees.

While we discuss these documents and details in our classrooms with our teachers (and add on a few additional aligned classroom expectations that are unique to our classrooms), we also hold, per District mandate, at least two assemblies per year where we discuss these expectations together as a group.

The last such assembly for grades 2-5 was September 5, 2023.
