Walgrove Weekly Message

Dear Walgrove Families and Staff,

First, a thank you to all the staff and students who helped to make the preliminary STEAM Certification visit a success!

The LAUSD STEAM Certification team, which visited Wednesday, said outside the chicken coop (right after happening upon the STEAM Studio), "We should certify you right now." They were, of course, impressed by all the interesting, creative, and rigorous work our kiddos have been doing in class, in the STEAM Studios, in the Wildlands and in the garden. They loved how students could speak extemporaneously about what they were learning (e.g, implied and explicit texture) and why (to better understand how objects and people exist in space).

There are other steps to the STEAM Certification process, but only two more short steps!

After resubmitting our PowerPoint presentation in early January and welcoming a formal, official STEAM Certification visit in February or March, we will be one of very few LAUSD schools to be officially deemed "STEAM Certified." STEAM certification will be a wonderful way to honor the ongoing interdisciplinary, project-based, STEAM work that classroom and enrichment teachers have been proffering to students for years.

In addition to prospective STEAM Certification, we face other opportunities. After showing the District that all of our General Education teachers have participated in at least 16 hours of reading, writing, learning and workshopping how to best meet the needs of students in the Gifted and Talented Education (GATE) realm, and jumping through a few additional bureaucratic hoops, we should be poised to meet the criteria for SAS status for the next academic (2024-2025) school year and the four years that follow. As with STEAM Certification, Schools for Advanced Studies (SAS) schools apply every five years for renewed status and are deemed schools of very high status.

Second, a thank you to all the parent and community donors and volunteers who make every day all the more possible. Without you, we wouldn't have STEAM Studio, Garden, Theater or PE with Coach Rachel. Without you, lunch would be in one spot (not two separate cafeteria areas) and a much greater mess. Without you, playground play would be more bananas. Without you, our offerings would still be amazing but not as outrageously so and not as unique. So, thank you!

And thank you folks who came to volunteer yesterday!
