Schoolwide Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (SW-PBIS)

LAUSD implements Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) district-wide. Each school in LAUSD must create school-site matrices, classroom matrices, minor-major matrices and more. 

The following documents are the current prevailing documents that govern student behavior, discipline, rewards, consequences., etc., at Walgrove Elementary. All documents were approved by the previous LSLC and will be revisited by the 2022-2023 LSLC at the first LSLC meeting, which will be Thursday, October 6 at 3:00pm in Dr. K's Zoom room. 

In addition to posting the documents in classrooms and around campus, Walgrove teachers share the documents with students and teach overt lessons on the pertinent concepts. 

The decision-making body that resides over the area of student discipline at Walgrove is the LSLC. 

The LSLC is comprised of the principal, elected classified staff, elected certificated staff, and elected parent representatives.

Important 2022-2023 COVID Info

2022-2023 COVID Safety Protocols

In alignment with the July 29, 2022 guidance from the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health, Los Angeles Unified is implementing the following safety procedures:

Masking: 

• Indoor masking is strongly recommended at all Los Angeles Unified schools and workplaces. 

• All schools have surgical masks available for distribution upon request to any student or employee. Daily Pass: 

• Students and employees DO NOT need to generate a Daily Pass QR code to enter school campuses. There will also be no screening for symptoms at the door. Parents, please screen your own children and do not send them to school when they are sick. 

• The Daily Pass will continue to be used to upload COVID-19 rapid antigen test results and vaccination records, monitor positive cases and to notify close contacts of a person who has tested positive. COVID “Response Testing:” 

• Similar to our summer school programs, Los Angeles Unified is implementing a “response testing” protocol using at-home rapid antigen tests. 

• Weekly asymptomatic COVID-19 testing is no longer required. 

• Testing will only be required for those experiencing COVID-19 symptoms or those who have been in close contact with a person who has tested positive. 

• Symptomatic students, employees, and close contacts will be provided with an at-home rapid antigen test by their school. 

• Students who become symptomatic or ill while at school are required to wear a mask while being treated at the health office and waiting to be picked up by a parent/guardian. School administrators will provide a rapid antigen test kit for the symptomatic student to take home. 

• Employees who become symptomatic or ill while at school are required to wear a mask while picking up their rapid antigen tests and notifying school administration that they will need to go home. 

• If parents have questions they can call their school site or the Family Help Desk at (213) 443-1300.

 Use of Rapid Antigen Tests: 

• The California Department of Public Health recommends that “antigen tests be considered the primary option for detecting COVID-19 in schools, compared to PCR tests.” The antigen test provides rapid results for individuals who have virus levels that are high enough to transmit the virus. The PCR tests have a high level of sensitivity and can pick up low levels of the virus both before and after infection. This may cause students to unnecessarily miss school with low levels of the virus despite being asymptomatic and not being a risk to transmit to others. Therefore, the antigen tests will help to ensure that every child has access to in-person learning while maintaining a safe school environment. Back to School Rapid Antigen Testing: 

• At-home rapid antigen tests were to be distributed to all students and staff to be taken no more than 48 hours prior to entering campus for the first day of school. 

• At-home rapid antigen tests will also be distributed at the end of the first week of school. All students and staff should take a rapid test no more than 48 hours prior to entering campus for the second week of school. Positive Test Results: 

• If an individual tests positive on a rapid antigen test, they should upload the result onto the Daily Pass. 

• Individuals who test positive must isolate at home and may be released from isolation on Day 6, provided: 

> Symptoms are improving; 

> They are fever-free for the past 24 hours without fever-reducing medication; 

> They have a negative test result from a rapid antigen test taken on or after Day 5; and

> They upload the negative test result to Daily Pass 

• Employees eligible for shortened isolation (returning after Day 5) are required to wear a highly protective mask at all times in the workplace around others, except when eating or drinking, for 10 days after the date of the positive test. 

• Students ending isolation early (after Day 5) are strongly recommended to wear a highly protective mask when around others, except when eating or drinking, for 10 days after the date of the positive test. 

Isolation Period Definition: 

• If the individual who tests positive is asymptomatic, Day 0 of isolation is the day the individual was tested. Day 1 is the first full day following the day the individual was tested. 

• If the individual is symptomatic, Day 0 of isolation is the day of symptom onset, regardless of when the individual tested positive. Day 1 is the first full day following the day that symptoms started. 

Procedures for Identified Close Contacts: 

• Student close contacts, regardless of vaccination status, and employee close contacts, regardless of booster status, can remain at school or work following exposure to a positive case as long as they: 

> Monitor for symptoms; 

> Remain asymptomatic; 

> Wear a highly protective mask at all times indoors (except when eating or drinking) for 10 days following the last date of exposure; and 

> Test negative with a rapid antigen test between 3-5 days after last date of exposure. 

Close Contact Definition: 

• A Close Contact is a person who shared the same indoor airspace with the infected person during the infectious period (beginning 48-hours before the positive test result or symptom onset) for 15 cumulative minutes or more over a 24-hour period. 

• Site administrators may limit designation of close contacts to individuals who were within 6 feet of the infected person for 15 minutes or more over a 24-hour period. 

• Persons with an outdoor exposure at school are not considered close contacts. 

Notification of Positive Cases: 

• Administrators will notify classroom teachers of uploaded positive cases during the identification of close contacts 

• All employees at a site (and union designees) will receive email notification when there is an uploaded positive case COVID Dashboards.

• The COVID dashboards will continue in the 2022-2023 school year. Rapid antigen tests will be the primary method for response testing and will be reflected on the dashboards. If PCR tests are uploaded into the Daily Pass, those will also be reflected on the dashboards. 

Meals: 

• Los Angeles Unified will maximize use of outdoor spaces for meals. Each school will have additional information on how they are utilizing outdoor space to keep our students safe. 

• Schools will offer breakfast for students at the start of the school year. In the event students in a classroom are required to wear masks, other breakfast location arrangements will be made. 

Vaccination: 

• Our employees are already vaccinated. We encourage all eligible students to be vaccinated as well, and all members of the school community to receive any boosters for which they are eligible.

After School Programs in a Nutshell

STAR and Beyond the Bell are two after-school programs that Walgrove offers. Typically, they are slightly different from one another.

STAR is a program that typically costs money, but for us it is grant-funded. So, it is free for families. It is somewhat structured and is usually first-come first-serve (people apply during the previous  Spring). However, this year, the STAR czars say they are accepting all applications. 

In STAR, there are teachers (generally one for every 20 or so kiddos) and rotations (homework; activities like crafts, dance, and chess; outside play). The expectation is that all students stay for the duration every day unless they have a regularly scheduled activity like piano lessons or karate. (But Richard can be somewhat flexible so long as there is communication and the parents sign the required early release forms.)

BEYOND THE BELL is funded differently, has more open enrollment, and is less structured. (During COVID the two programs were combined.) There is a "coach" and one or two more staff members, depending on enrollment. 

Usually, both programs require regular attendance until 6pm. However, Walgrove STAR Director Richard Medina has strived to allow more flexibility. Though, he must have folks sign early release forms. If you know you will have a regularly scheduled class like choir or karate or something, then let him know and sign a form for that. If you have an emergency and have to pick your child up earlier than expected, then let him know and sign a form for that. What we (Richard, the STAR funders and I) don't want is for people to use it as random babysitting where they only use it sometimes or for only a half hour every day or in other ways that disrupt the fidelity of the program and undermine the grant requirements.

There are also paid classes like skateboarding, drumming and other such activities through STAR NOVA and STAR GALAXY. Richard will share more info about those as they happen. Those are occasional and for just a few weeks. 

We will also have Angel City Youth Chorale after school in the auditorium one day per week. That day has not yet been set. Last year, it was Tuesday. Kids don't have to be in the after-school program to join choir. If they are in the after-school program, they can attend choir. Students perform in December and June at Royce Hall along with the Angel City Chorale. 

We will also have violin in the auditorium once or twice per week with Danielle Villalobos who provides the violins. The students perform at events like the Holiday Program and the Monarch Fest. 

Additional programs outside of Walgrove include the Venice Boys and Girls Club and Penmar Park. They have programs for a small free. Often, when enough Walgrove students enroll, the organization sends a van and pick kids up in the front office after school. Then, parents pick their kiddos up at the Boys and Girls Club or Penmar Park at 6. (I do not know how flexible that pick-up time is.)

Overall, we do what we can to provide for kiddos a safe and fun place to be while their parents work!

School Starts Monday, August 15, 2022

Dear Walgrove Families, 

We look forward to welcoming you to campus Monday, August 15 at 8:05am! 

Here are some handy tidbits of info to know now:

DROP OFF/PICK UP:

You may drop your kiddo off at any of the four gates, but preferably the gate closest to class:
> Appleton Gate for Grades 4-5
> Walgrove Gate for Grades 2-3
> Morningside Gate for Grades TK-1 and Alt Curriculum
> Maplewood Gate for Families with Multiple Grades

UPDATE: New Gates as of 08/18/2022

> Appleton Gate for Grades 4-5 (though any kiddo can enter any gate)
> Walgrove Gate for Grades 2-3 (though any kiddo can enter any gate)
> Morningside Gate for Grades TK-1 and Alt Curriculum (though any kiddo can enter any gate)
> Dolphin Gate on Morningside for Grades TK-1 and Alt Curriculum (though any kiddo...)

Daily drop-off is 7:30-8:05am. Students will be supervised in the Quad until 8:05.

Daily pick-up is at the same gate from 2:30-2:45. STAR/Beyond the Bell pick up is via the gate nearest the Auditorium.

SCHOOL STARTS: 

School starts at 8:05am. (Gates will close at 8:05. Anyone who enters after 8:05 must enter through the office and get a tardy slip.)

School ends at 2:30 (except on Tuesdays, when it ends at 1:35).

AFTER SCHOOL:

Strings by the Sea (violin) and Angel City Youth Chorale (choir) are free after-school programs for students who are in STAR/Beyond the Bell and students who are not. More info on these two programs once school is in session. Musical Theater, which is another after-school program, starts after Winter Break. (Theater class is during the school day, weekly all year, as are the other enrichments of STEAM Studio, PE, Library and Garden.)

WELCOME PACKETS and ANTIGEN COVID TESTS:

You may pick up a welcome packet and antigen test (one each per child) anytime between August 8 and August 12 8:00am-3:00pm. COVID testing is strongly recommended but not required within 48 hours of the start of school. ONLY UPLOAD THE RESULTS IF YOU ARE POSITIVE. Do not upload negative test results. IF YOU TEST POSITIVE, DO NOT ATTEND SCHOOL. Also, do not attend if you have symptoms, such as headache, body aches, runny nose, sore throat, fever, cough or diarrhea.

Welcome packets will also be sent home on the first day of school.

Welcome letters, welcome packets and class and teacher assignments will be sent to families electronically. In addition, hard copy welcome packets will be available in the office for pick up starting Monday, August 1 and will also be sent home with students on the first day of school.

Coffee and Diet Coke with the Principal every Friday right after the assembly at the Council Circle.

Parents are allowed onto campus to escort their kiddos, to attend assemblies and/or Coffee with the P, and to observe class with an appointment. However, to stay longer, please become a registered volunteer and volunteer in a classroom, in the library, in the Edible Garden, in the Wildlands, on the playground, the cafeteria or elsewhere on campus!

What to bring to school:

• Backpack
• Snack
• Lunch
• Change of clothes/pants in a Ziplock bag
• If you bring technology, you may use it only when directed to by a teacher. No tech use during recess, lunch or at STAR
• Please don't bring toys, as they may be lost, stolen or stir up conflict

STEAM Certification

Dear Walgrove Monarchs, 

You may remember that we started the process of becoming STEAM certified through the LAUSD STEAM Certification process during the 2019-2020 school year. Upon our final Saturday meeting, we shared a draft of our PPT with the other schools who were also seeking certification, turned in a draft to the committee and then were expecting a visit at the end of March, 2020. 

But then COVID happened! 

STEAM Certification was on hold. 

So, we had until the end of this year to submit an updated PPT to the committee, which we did. The committee will score our PPT in late July and then...

WE expect to receive a visit from the certification team this Fall where we will henceforth offically earn STEAM certification, pending the committee's approval (I'm crossing my monarch wings!).

Greeting from Our Principal

 It is my great honor and privilege to serve as the principal of Walgrove. 

Walgrove is a vibrant community replete with positive energy, artistic and entrepreneurial exuberance and big dreams. I am excited about all that we will together create! 

To share a bit about myself, I have been an educator for close to 29 years, 21 as a teacher and 8 as an administrator. I have taught nearly all grades and subjects from bilingual kindergarten in East Oakland to Advanced Placement English Literature in Beverly Hills. 

As an administrator, I have served students at a charter span school in Carson and more recently the juvenile court schools for the Los Angeles County Office of Education. 

My passions include creativity, rigor, experimentation, entrepreneurship and interdisciplinary project-based work where students dream, discover, craft and create and ultimately become all they are meant to become. 

It is a joy to be immersed in a place where the arts and humanities play a role in unmasking the complexities of math and science and where students are cultivated to become skilled and confident leaders and collaborators. 

I am thrilled to work in an environment where social-emotional growth is emphasized alongside academic prowess, recognizing that in addition to scholarship, students must build social skills and emotional intelligence in order to become truly great leaders poised to effect positive change in our ever-evolving global family. 

With its Wildlands, STEAM Studio, Edible Garden, theater program, small burgeoning farm and myriad other offerings, I am convinced that Walgrove is the quintessential den of creativity and a truly unique place where children both flourish and are happy. With great eagerness and enthusiasm, I look forward to another fantastic year with all of you.

School Safety Update

Dear Walgrove Families and Staff, 

To ensure a school community that is as safe as possible, please help us adhere to the following:

School Access:

• All gates locked at all times, other than during arrival and dismissal when they are manned.
• At least one gatekeeper per gate should have on an orange (or yellow) vest. 
• All gatekeepers must screen entrants for COVID symptoms.
• No doors to the outdoor world may be propped open.
• All BIIs the gatekeepers don't recognize and substitute BIIs and substitute teachers and parent volunteers must enter through the front office. Only 5-minute parent escorts, LAUSD employees and non-LAUSD BIIs that you recognize may enter through the side gates. And all must sign in at the front office, anyway.
• All parents who are staying longer than a 5-minute escort to class must have advance approval from the Principal. The exception is volunteers who work a regular schedule (e.g., M-W-F)
• All parent volunteers must wear their badge.
• All visitors must wear a visitor sticker.
• All aides and assistants must wear orange (or yellow) vests while manning the gate and/or supervising the yard.
• All staff must have email and/or text at the ready for cases of emergency.

Student Property:

• Students may not use electronic devices during or after school. All devices on hand for emergencies should be left in backpacks. 
• Students are strongly discouraged from bringing toys to school, as they may incite conflict, be a danger to younger children (or our prized flora and fauna) or be lost or stolen. Please keep your Pokemon cards and other similar toys at home. We have games and activities at school for use during recess, lunch and after school. If you do bring toys, despite this plea, please assume your own risk.
• Students should not distribute or share food, as there are many students with different types of allergies and others with yet-to-be-known allergies. Any/all food distribution should be handled officially through teachers in concert with the principal, as there are competitive food laws and other health laws to consider. 
• Students should honor and respect their own possessions and the possessions of others. Please don't leave behind clothes on the ground. If you see someone's jacket on the ground, kindly bring it to them. Don't interfere with other students' books and papers and materials in or on their desks. Treat our things with the same respect we strive to treat one another. 

COVID Safety:

• LAUSD staff, registered parent volunteers and students should test weekly.
• All who are sick with something contagious, either COVID or a cold, should stay home. 
• If you test positive, isolate and test again on Day 6 or beyond. Come back to work or school as soon as you test negative (or after 10 days have passed). 
• If there is a positive case in a class, all others in that class should mask for 10 days. 
• For special events that are outdoors (e.g., assemblies, volunteer days and WeMoves), we recommend negative tests and masks. For special events that are indoors, we require negative tests and recommend masks.

We are registering folks electronically again this year for a few reasons:

1. It is easier for those who cannot come in person or who have to travel far

2. It is easy to timestamp since emails are super precise in their display of the time
3. It prevents folks from gathering in person during a pandemic

Please submit your application NO EARLIER THAN THURSDAY NIGHT (MAY 19) @ 8 PM. 

We will only consider electronic applications STARTING THURSDAY AT 8 PM. 

No early applications will be accepted. 

No in-person or hard-copy applications will be accepted.

Students will be admitted to STAR in order of receipt (first-come, first-serve).

Hopefully, the District will accept all other applicants into Beyond the Bell (which is less structured than STAR). 

During the 2021-2022 year, the two programs were one-and-the-same. 

But, let's hope that they are bifurcated next year as during previous years (or open to all) and all who need after school care receive after school care.

NEW COVID GUIDANCE

New LAUSD guidance says that all asymptomatic indoor-close contacts, vaccinated or unvaccinated, MAY come to school but MUST wear a "highly protective" mask for 10 days after exposure. (This starts Wednesday, May 4, 2022.)

Here is this new District info with pertinent parts in yellow:

So, the guidance is no longer that only unvaccinated household members must quarantine. Now, symptomatic indoor-close contacts must quarantine (and of course positive cases must isolate). Asymptomatic household members, and asymptomatic indoor-close contacts may resume normal activity -- masked. 

And ALL indoor-close contacts of all stripes must wear high-quality-masks indoors for 10 days.

So, if there is a positive case in a class, it is likely that the positive case will stay home and all asymptomatic others, including classmates and siblings in other classes, whether vaccinated or not, will come to school and wear high-quality-masks indoors for 10 days.

Between Day 5 and Day 10 of isolation, positive individuals may visit any symptomatic testing location to have a rapid test administered. 

Sites can be found at https://achieve.lausd.net/covidtestingappt. Appointments are not required.  Students are strongly encouraged to have their rapid test administered and read at the testing site.

ALL students and staff must also test weekly. (This is easy!)

In order to facilitate this new paradigm, I am required to engage in contact tracing -- keep track of cases, keep track of close contacts, keep track of their symptoms if they emerge, and keep watch of their adherence to masking policies. I will do my best. 

While it would be easier to just mandate indoor masking for all, the District (and the County) is having us embark upon this new adventure, most likely to ensure that as many students as possible can attend school.

What is UTK?

UTK, or Universal Transitional Kindergarten, is basically (but not quite) an amalgamation of ETK and TK -- but with UTK at all public schools, expanded age criteria, and no limit on family income. 

So now, any student who turns 5 between September 2 of the current academic year and September 1 of the subsequent year qualifies for UTK for the current year. 

So, if you have a munchkin who will turn 5 between September 2, 2022 and September 1, 2023, your munchkin qualifies for UTK during the 2022-2023 school year. (If they turn 5 before then, they qualify for kinder, and currently, we are combining UTK and kinder.)

While both of our UTK classes are currently also combo kinder classes, if enrollemnt surges, we will be allowed to open a new kinder class. (So, let's recruit!)

In the meantime, we will put the youngest among us with Ms. B in what would have been an ETK class. They will be in Rm 1. We will put the older kiddos with Ms. Zeena in Rm 4. However, this is just our initial goal. If 20 kindergarteners walk in and only 10 UTK, then we shall see. Then one UTK class and one K class. It all depends on who walks in the door. We will also take into consideration parent preference based on their knowledge of their child/ren. 

The good news is that both Ms. Zeena and Ms. B are fantastic teachers who will do great regardless. 

(So is Ms. Chin who will be teaching first grade!)

If more kindergarteners enroll than E-CAST has projected, we will open a Kinder class. Ms. Chin will teach that class, and we will hire a new first-grade teacher. That would happen over the summer or by the first five weeks of school. (Norm Day is the fifth Friday.) If more families enroll during that time - by Norm Day, we will open more classes. With 10 acres, we have the space. We definitely have the love!
