Completed Tentative Matrix 2025-2026

Dear Walgrove Families and Staff,

Each Spring, it is a particular LAUSD practice that teachers come in one at a time in order of seniority and sit with the Principal and UTLA Chapter Chair to select their preferred grade levels for the following year. (While UTLA prefers a meeting with all teachers, the District prefers one at a time.)

While the Administrator is able to pursue the process of making adjustments to the Matrix in order to best serve the school's instrutional program, it is customary to avoid doing so at all costs because it is important to honor teachers and to ensure they are happy about what they are teaching. So, typically, the Principal assigns teachers to the grade levels they have each selected.

After current Walgrove teachers make their selections, Dr. K reviews the results and then adds to the Matrix any new-hires. In our case, this year, we added Ms. Lynn Webster, who is a returning Walgrove teacher, and two additonal new-hires, each of which is slated to teach at Walgrove starting either this year (as in the case of Mr. Fernandez) or next year (as in the case of Ms. Diamond).

Today, eligible Walgrove teachers participated in this Matrix process. The following is the resulting Matrix:

Regarding the hiring process, the Principal typically assembles a panel of a certain size and composition suited to the specific task; asks thoughtful pre-written questions; uses a rating rubric; and of course checks references. Sometimes, the panel will want to see a demo lesson. While there is guidance on the process, there is no one-size-fits-all requirement. The Principal has a certain amount of discretion.

The goal is, of course, to hire creative and talented teachers who are poised and willing to serve the needs of Walgrove students, families, staff, and the community.

I hope this information is clear and helpful.

Dear Walgrove Warriors and Wunderkinds,

The School Experience Survey closes this Friday, April 11 (extended from March 21). Because we would love for everyone to take the survey. If we get to 100% parent-participation (at least one parent survey per Walgrove family) by Friday at noon, we will hold a bubble-gum/beach-ball/ bubbles party in the Quad Monday, April 21 at 2pm. Tentative Blank Matrix 2025-2026

TK is now for all students who turn four by Sept 1. TK class size is now 20:1.

It is quite possible there will be NO combination classes.

While I am am a firm believer in the notion that combination classes can be ideal, I recognize that not all people feel that way. Hence, having a plan that allows for both possibilities is even more ideal.
